Cryptocurrency is a type of digital money that lets you send, receive and store value online, without needing a bank. Cryptocurrencies are decentralised, meaning they're powered by technology (called blockchain) rather than governments or central banks. This makes them secure, fast and accessible from anywhere in the world.

Cryptocurrency prices can experience significant fluctuation due to speculation, limited oversight, and market psychology.

How cryptocurrency works?

Cryptocurrency operates on a technology called blockchain. Imagine blockchain as a public digital ledger (a record book) that everyone can see but no one can tamper with. Every time a cryptocurrency transaction is made, it's recorded in a block (like a page in a ledger). These blocks are connected in a chain, hence the name blockchain.

Cryptocurrencies use advanced cryptographic techniques to secure transactions and control the creation of new units. This ensures that transactions are irreversible and protected from tampering.

Every cryptocurrency user has a pair of cryptographic keys—a public key, which is shared with others to receive funds, and a private key, which is kept secret and used to sign transactions.

Cryptocurrency is:

  • Secure: Cryptography ensures the security of transactions.
  • Digital: Only exists digitally.
  • Potentially volatile: Their value can fluctuate rapidly.

Cryptoassets are high-risk and may not be right for everyone. The value of your crypto can go up or down at any time and may even fall to zero. You should only invest if you fully understand the risks and if it suits your financial situation. Funds used for crypto transactions are not safeguarded and are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) or the Financial Ombudsman Service.
